Misaki Nakayama Reflects on Her Journey and Her Love for Sabah

Hey Misaki, let’s get to know you better! What was young Misaki like, and how did you fall in love with football?
My older brother played soccer, and I would always tag along with him to the field. While he was busy playing, I would entertain myself by playing in the mud on the sidelines. At first, I was just there to have fun, but over time, being around the game sparked my interest in soccer. Eventually, I wanted to join in rather than just watch from the side. That’s how my journey with soccer began. As a child, I was full of energy and quite mischievous, always looking for something exciting to do.

Who was your biggest inspiration growing up, both on and off the pitch?
During my junior high and high school years, I was fortunate to have three coaches who played a significant role in shaping me as a player. I was quite cocky at the time, but no matter what, they always believed in me and never stopped pushing me to understand the true essence of football. Their relentless guidance and tough but invaluable lessons forced me to think deeply about the game—so much so that it sometimes felt overwhelming. Looking back, I realize how crucial their influence was in developing my mindset and approach to football.

You’re a pretty versatile player! How would you describe your playing style, and do you have a favorite position on the pitch?
My playing style is defined by my unique ball touch, precise ball control, and strong playmaking ability. I thrive in both attacking and defensive midfield roles, adapting to the needs of the game. More than anything, I’m the type of player who always wants to be at the heart of the action, constantly involved with the ball from the first whistle to the last.

What has been your toughest challenge as a footballer so far, and how did you overcome it?
Missing out on selection for the Japanese national team and not getting any playing time with my professional club was a tough and frustrating period in my career. However, even when I wasn’t on the pitch, I refused to lose heart or give up. Instead, I stayed focused, kept pushing myself, and continued working hard every single day. In the end, that persistence led me to a team that valued me and gave me the opportunity to prove myself. Looking back, I truly believe that hard work is the only way to grow and transform as a player.

So, let’s talk about Sabah! How does it feel to play for Sabah FC, and are you enjoying your time here?
Although my time with the team was short, I’m truly grateful that my first overseas challenge was with this club. Playing for such a historic and prestigious team was an incredible honor, and the experience was nothing short of unforgettable.

I think it’s fair to say that we don’t just like you—we absolutely love you! Do you have a message for all your amazing supporters here in Malaysia?
I have a deep love and appreciation for the Malaysian and Sabah fans. The energy and passion you bring to every match made playing in front of you an unforgettable experience. I felt truly honored and happy to share those moments on the field with your support. I sincerely hope that one day, I’ll have the opportunity to play in front of you all again. Your unwavering support means the world to me, and I would be incredibly grateful if you continue to cheer me on in the future.

We’ve heard that you’ll be moving to Sweden—another exciting new adventure for you! How do you feel about it, and are you excited to get started?
Yes, playing in Europe has always been a dream of mine, so I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity. It’s a chance to challenge myself in a new environment, compete at a higher level, and continue developing as a player. I’m really looking forward to the journey ahead and excited to see how much I can grow and improve from this point onward. This is an important step in my career, and I can’t wait to embrace the challenges that come with it.

Brilliant! So, what’s the goal for 2025? Do you have any specific targets you’re aiming to achieve this year?
About a year ago, I made a conscious decision not to set specific goals. Instead, I chose to focus on what I can control—giving my best effort every single day and staying committed to constant improvement. I believe that by staying disciplined and putting in the work consistently, I will naturally create opportunities and shape my own future.

To wrap up this interview, what are your thoughts on women’s football in Malaysia? Do you see room for improvement, and if so, what changes would you like to see?
Malaysian players are incredibly kind, warm-hearted, and a pleasure to play alongside. I genuinely love being part of their football culture. However, I believe there is still so much untapped potential. How we utilize our time—before training, before matches, over the course of a day, a week, a month, or even a year—can have a huge impact on our growth as players. I’m still learning and improving myself, so I don’t want to sound like I have all the answers, but I truly want to keep pushing forward together and striving for more.

Additionally, I believe that if the Malaysian league becomes more open to foreign players, it will elevate the overall level of competition. Exposure to different styles and experiences can only help the league grow, and that’s something I sincerely hope to see in the future.
