Can you tell us about where you are from and your childhood growing up?
I’m from Sungai Buloh, Selangor, specifically Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir. It might come as a surprise to many, but I only started playing football at 21. Now at 23, I guess you could say I’m living the dream.
Many footballers start young, but your journey begins later. What was the spark that made you decide to pick up football at that point in your life?
I’ve always been different from my friends. From a young age, I was drawn to physical activities and sports. Call it luck or fate, but one day I stumbled upon a football, and instantly fell in love with the game. What began as a hobby has now turned into something more, and I still can’t believe I’m playing this sport competitively.
Were there any challenges you faced stepping into the game later, especially when competing with those who’ve been playing since childhood? How did you overcome them?
Playing football has always been a huge challenge for me, especially going up against more experienced players. But instead of feeling discouraged, I use that challenge as fuel to push myself further. I stay determined and constantly work on improving by dedicating time to training, participating in programs, and expanding my knowledge. I even turn to YouTube to learn how to become a better footballer, honing my skills and diving into every aspect of the game.
Before joining Selangor FC, which academy or club did you first start playing football seriously with?
Before joining Selangor FC, I played for Sternen FC, a small club, but one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It was where I learned the fundamentals of football. It wasn’t easy with Sternen—we struggled to find players and lacked sponsorship. At one point, we even had to contribute RM10 each just to be able to train. Despite the challenges, I’m forever grateful for the lessons learned, both on and off the field. In 2022, I represented Sternen in the FAS tournament, and shortly after, I went for a trial organized by Selangor FC.
Who has been your biggest role model in football, and how have they influenced your approach to the game?
I don’t really have a role model here in Malaysia, maybe because I’m still quite new to the game. But if I had to choose players to look up to, it would be Ronaldinho and Messi. I’ve spent countless hours watching and studying their gameplay on YouTube. The way they handle the ball never fails to leave me in awe.
What’s it like being part of a prestigious club like Selangor FC, and how has the experience shaped you as a player both on and off the field?
As a Selangor kid, playing for Selangor is truly a dream come true. It’s even more astonishing to think that I’m representing the club, especially since I started playing later than most. What I appreciate most about being part of this team is the genuine care and support from the club and staff. Being with the team has allowed me to further develop my football skills and knowledge. Selangor FC has transformed me into a better person, instilling discipline, strengthening my mentality, emphasizing the importance of fitness, and so much more.
Is there a player on the team you’re particularly close to, and what does their friendship mean to you both on and off the pitch?
For me, Yusma and Nurin are my closest friends on the field because they consistently motivate me. Their positive words inspire me to keep pushing forward. They not only emphasize the importance of perseverance but also instill in me the confidence to pursue my goals with determination. I’m forever grateful and lucky to have them by my side.
With only a few games left in the ongoing LWN, what are your short-term goals for the rest of the season, and what are your long-term aspirations for your football career?
For the final three matches, I hope to be selected to play, and I promise to give my absolute best to help us finish as high as possible in the table. Call me a dreamer, but I genuinely aspire to represent my country one day. I know I still have a long way to go to achieve this goal, but I believe that with my determination and the support of my team, it is attainable.
Let’s talk about Coach Osmera. He’s well known for his modern approach to the game. Have you found it challenging to adapt to his style of play, or are you enjoying the learning process? And how is he as a coach overall? We've heard he has quite a sense of humor off the pitch—what’s your experience with that?
He’s funny and intimidating at the same time! Hahaha. Coach Osmera is my favorite coach because of his quirky personality and great sense of humor off the field. He loves to tease us, but once we step onto the pitch, he becomes very serious and strict. I find his modern tactical approach both challenging and exciting, as it pushes me to learn and adapt quickly within a short timeframe. This challenge motivates me to perform at my best while also working on my ball control and movement, especially since I still have a lot to learn.
Lastly, do you have a message for your fans and everyone who has supported you throughout your journey as a footballer? What would you like to say to those who have been with you every step of the way?
I hope my fans and supporters never lose faith in me as I pursue my football career. You have been with me every step of the way, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. You are incredibly important to me, and without your support, I might have faltered and lost the motivation to continue playing.
I apologize for any shortcomings I may have, and I sincerely hope you will continue to be my backbone. I also want to extend my deepest thanks to my family for their unwavering support and prayers. Without their encouragement, I may not have reached this level.
Remember, whatever we do, the prayers and blessings of our parents have a profound impact on our lives. Let’s never forget to express our gratitude to those who are always by our side. May Allah ease my journey in football. Amin.
