Nur Shadrina, at just 14 years old, already exhibits a maturity beyond her years on the football pitch. Despite her young age, she approaches a crucial juncture in her career where expectations rise for consistent performance. Supported by her club, coaches, and above all, her family, she embraces this challenge with determination and readiness, as we discovered during our recent conversation with her.
After her remarkable victory in the U15 Puteri League, we had the opportunity to sit down with Syadriana before her well-deserved break, delving into her early life, her initial encounter with the sport, her anticipation for the upcoming FASWSL, and her approach to overcoming new challenges.
Can you paint a picture of the early experiences that kindled your deep love for football?
My love for football began when I started playing with my older brother, who became my role model. We'd spend hours kicking the ball around in our backyard, and those moments ignited a passion that has stayed with me ever since.
How has your family supported you in your football career, and what are some of the challenges you and your family have faced together throughout your journey as a footballer?
My family has been my unwavering support system, sacrificing their time, energy, and financial resources to facilitate my training and matches. When I was just eight years old, we experienced a frightening accident due to my mother's exhaustion from driving me tirelessly from Ampang to Seremban for a tournament. Despite my father's demanding work schedule, it was my mother who dedicatedly chauffeured me to games and practices during my formative years in football. There were moments when our finances were stretched thin, and we could only afford petrol and toll fees, resorting to simple meals like bread to sustain me for training and competitions. Their relentless dedication has been the cornerstone of my football journey; without them, I wouldn't be where I am today. I am profoundly grateful for their sacrifices and hope to repay them by pursuing a successful football career.
Given your smaller stature, has size been a significant factor in your football journey, and have you encountered instances of rejection solely based on your physical dimensions?
When I first started playing football, I didn't think size mattered much. But as I got older, I realized how important physical strength is on the field. Being shorter than most players, I had to work extra hard to build up my strength. It wasn't easy, and there were moments of doubt, especially when I was rejected from a sports school because of my size. I felt like giving up on my football dreams. But thanks to the support of my family, friends, and coach, I found the courage to keep going. My brother, who's also on the smaller side, inspired me with his incredible skills. While size might seem like a big deal in football, I believe that my passion and determination can overcome any obstacle, no matter how big or small.
Share your experience of winning the Under-15 Puteri League with Kelana United and being crowned as the player of the tournament. How did you feel about this achievement?
To be honest, I'm still in disbelief about being chosen as the Best Player of the tournament. I feel there were many other deserving candidates. I want to express my gratitude to all the coaches and the entire management team of Kelana United for their unwavering belief in me. I am truly thankful to Allah for granting me this opportunity to experience such an incredible moment. I also want to thank my mama & papa for their constant prayers and support, they have been my pillars of strength through every hurdle. Without their sacrifices, I wouldn't have reached this milestone by the grace of Allah.
As the FASWSL approaches, what are your aspirations for this season with Real CJ, and what long-term goals do you have as a footballer?
For the upcoming FASWSL tournament, I'm keeping my expectations modest as numerous teams are boasting exceptional players. Therefore, I aim to give my all to the team, playing with utmost dedication. God willing, we will endeavor to compete fiercely against the other teams.
You’ve achieved so much already, at such a young age. How do you personally measure success?
On a personal level, I am deeply grateful for the blessings and opportunities that have come my way, but let me tell you, it's been quite the journey. I didn't come from a privileged background, and there have been countless hurdles to overcome. My parents' sacrifices have been the bedrock of my progress. Yet, despite any success I've achieved at this young age, I'm acutely aware that there's still much ground to cover. I need to push myself harder, learn from every experience, and work on my shortcomings. What I've accomplished so far isn't the ultimate goal; it's just the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of growth and improvement.
