Farhanah Talks Discovering Football, Overcoming Challenges & Her Message To Aspiring Young Footballers

What first drew you to football, and how has your journey shaped your identity as a woman in Singapore’s football scene?
My dad introduced me to the world of football when I was in kindergarten. I later discovered that he had played for Gombak United and Tanjong Pagar.

When I was 12, my sister would often take me to her soccer practices, where she was coached by Coach Sajjid while playing for Bishan ITE. After excelling academically in secondary school, I joined the school football team at the age of 14. It was there that I made many new friends and decided to dedicate more of my time to football by assisting with ball retrieval for SPL teams.

At 16, I attended the U19 trials and successfully made it onto the team. Since then, I’ve been part of the national setup. The journey has been incredible. I’ve had the opportunity to experience a variety of coaching styles and playing techniques, while also witnessing the growth of women’s football in Singapore over the past 11 years. Football has taught me countless valuable lessons and shaped me both as a person and as a player. I’ve navigated every level of football, overcoming both emotional and physical challenges. If it weren’t for football, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far, and why does it hold such a special place in your heart? 
The proudest moment of my career will always be giving my best to the team, whether it’s by scoring a goal or helping to lead the team to success. I firmly believe that fostering a positive attitude can significantly impact both the team’s dynamics and the growth of individual players.

Women’s football is gaining traction globally—how do you see its development in Singapore, and what role do you hope to play in its future?
I believe that with increased support from organizations dedicated to developing women’s football in Singapore—such as promoting the sport in schools, expanding academies, and initiatives like UTR that provide younger players with opportunities to play and study overseas—the growth of women’s football will continue to thrive. With these efforts, I am hopeful that the standard of the game will continue to rise. I also look forward to sharing my experiences with younger players and supporting them in their journey.

Do you have any match-day habits, superstitions, or rituals that help you prepare mentally and physically?
Before a game, I usually listen to Taylor Swift songs, reggae, or upbeat music to help me relax, focus, and stay grounded. Additionally, I recite a prayer in my heart to remain calm and centered.

If you could play alongside any footballer in the world—past or present—who would it be, and what would you want to learn from them?
I would love the opportunity to play alongside Meghan Klingenberg (U.S. defender) to master the art of defending. Similarly, playing with Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City midfielder) would be an incredible chance to learn the art of ball distribution.

What’s one defining life lesson that football has taught you, and how do you apply it off the pitch?
It’s all about staying disciplined and finding balance in life. This includes managing the food you consume, maintaining your social life, committing to football, and prioritizing your work and career. Successfully navigating  these areas requires a great deal of self- discipline and focus.

What’s a challenge you’ve faced in balancing football with personal commitments, and how have you grown from that experience?
The biggest challenges I’ve faced have been staying disciplined while feeling both emotionally and mentally exhausted. Initially, balancing work and my football career was extremely difficult. When I started my full-time job, I often fell sick, and training at high intensity after work was incredibly draining. However, after a few months, my body adapted to the demands, and I learned how to better manage my recovery. This involved cutting back on social activities, such as spending time with friends. I came to understand that being an athlete—or even a footballer—requires making tough choices. Sacrifices are necessary to achieve personal success.

If you could share one message with young girls in Singapore aspiring to play football, what would it be—and why is it so important to you?
To all the girls who aspire to play football: remember, the sky’s the limit. Aim higher than your goals and stay committed to your vision. Embrace every challenge along the way, seeing each one as an opportunity to learn and grow.
‎ 
When you’re not training or competing, how do you unwind or spend time with friends and family?
I often travel to other countries to clear my mind and connect with nature beyond Singapore. When traveling isn’t an option, I spend my days off with my cats and loved ones. I also make it a point to visit the gym two to three times a week for strength and conditioning.

To wrap things up, could you share what’s on the horizon for you in 2025? What are some of the key goals—both on and off the field—that you’re hoping to achieve this year?
My goal for 2025 is to consistently play quality football for my club, help lead them to success, and compete in major tournaments. Ultimately, I aspire to represent Singapore in the 2025 SEA Games.
