Beyond The Surface With Azza Harniza & Azza Harmiza

How would you describe yourselves as individuals, and in what ways are you both similar? What are some of the key differences between you two that make each of you unique?
Mat has a more masculine personality, while Nini is more feminine. However, despite our differences, we share one important trait—our unwavering fighting spirit and resilience, which we inherited from our father. As for what makes us unique? Honestly, nothing particularly special—except that we’re not like most twins. We don’t always match, and we each have our own distinct ways of doing things.
‎
Among sepak takraw, football, and Teqball, which one is your favorite and why? Can you share the story of how you got started in each of these sports, and what made you fall in love with them?
Our journey in sports began with football. In 2008, when we were just five years old, our father brought us to the CIMB Football Clinic, which was originally meant for boys only. Despite that, we joined anyway—just the two of us, the only girls there. That experience sparked our love for competitive sports.
‎
We are passionate about Sepak Takraw, specializing in the doubles category (beregu). Frustrated with undisciplined teammates, we decided to focus on this sport. Our journey began unexpectedly when we joined a SUKMA selection just for fun—never realizing it would become such a big part of our lives.
‎ ‎
Later, we explored Teqball, simply wanting to try something new. Alhamdulillah, Mat had the incredible opportunity to represent Malaysia at the 2023 Teqball World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. It was a dream come true, not just for us but for our father, who had always hoped to see one of his children represent the country. What truly keeps us going in sports is the unwavering support of our family, especially our Dad, who has always been our biggest motivator.
‎
What's the best part of having your twin as your teammate? If you had to name two things you admire about your sister, whether on or off the field, what would they be?
We have a natural chemistry that makes communication effortless. At times, we don’t even need to speak to understand each other. Our intelligence and independence also help us adapt quickly in any game, giving us a strong advantage as teammates.
‎
You both have a fiery, competitive presence on the field. Where does that come from? Have you always had that edge, or is it something that developed as you grew into your sports?
Our fiery spirit comes from our dad, who taught us that failure is never the end but rather a lesson to propel us forward. He instilled in us the belief that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and the key to success is continuous improvement. A loss only becomes a defeat if you choose to give up, and we’ve learned to view every setback as an opportunity to grow and keep pushing forward.
‎
What’s the biggest challenge of being twins in competitive sports? Do people compare you a lot, and how do you handle that?
We get compared all the time, but we always respond the same way our dad does— "You're both the same. " His words remind us that, despite our differences, we share the same strengths and are equally capable.
‎
What’s been your most memorable moment on the field together? Whether it’s a win, a tough loss, or even just a small momentthat meant a lot—what’s one experience you’ll never forget?
One of my most unforgettable moments was the 2023 KL Women’s League Final, where we won our first-ever league title with our entire family cheering us on. It was a dream come true. For Mat, a tough moment came during LWN 2024. Although my family traveled far to support me. I was left on the bench as a reserve and didn’t get the chance to play. On the other hand, another moment I’ll never forget was during the KL League 2024 Final—hearing my dad shout words of encouragement non-stop, even though he was sick at the time. That moment truly touched my heart and will stay with me forever
‎
You both recently experienced the loss of your father, and we’re deeply sorry for your loss. How would you describe him as a father, both in the way he supported you and the values he instilled in you? What role did he play in inspiring you to take up sports and pursue them with such passion?
Our dad is the best father, the greatest coach, the most inspiring grandfather, the devoted husband to our mum, and, above all, the ultimate motivator. His unwavering fighting spirit, born from his own experience as an athlete, is deeply embedded in us. We've witnessed his strength and resilience firsthand—he never backs down, no matter the obstacle. It’s this same determination and perseverance that he’s passed down to us, shaping who we are and driving us to keep pushing forward.
‎
It’s 2025—what’s next for you two? What are some of the big goals, plans, or dreams you’re hoping to achieve this year, both in sports and in life?
We’re driven to make our family proud and ensure that we’re recognized for the right reasons. Our aspirations go beyond just success—we want to create lasting impact. This includes building fulfilling careers, becoming trusted ambassadors for a reputable sports brand, and securing sponsorships that reflect our dedication, values, and love for the sports we pursue. Ultimately, we hope to inspire others while continuing to grow both professionally and personally.

To wrap up this interview, is there a message you'd like to share with your fans and supporters?
Mat: Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you. Always remember, never put others down to make yourself feel superior. Keep supporting me, and I’ll continue to give my best!
‎

Nini: A heartfelt thank you to my coaches and friends who have believed in us and given us so many opportunities. Your support has made us more confident and driven to keep pushing forward. Remember, success comes to those who are patient and persistent. We love you all! 🫶🏻

What an incredibly inspiring journey! Thank you both for sharing your story with us. We're excited to see what the future holds for you. Best of luck!

Mat & Nini: Thank you so much!
